About the Course

Covers all basic functions in Linux. Students first learn about Linux distributions and Copyleft. Then they learn to use shell commands to query the system for basic information and to get help from the operating system. The course covers Linux file systems, including managing disks and directories, working with absolute and relative paths, and how to organize, backup and restore files. Students learn to work with text files from the shell and use expressions to search files, directories and file contents. Students also learn about managing users and groups including passwords and user profiles. Students use security principles to set permissions and ownership. Finally, students learn to manage jobs, processes, the boot process, and system settings including SELinux. Students will build their own Linux machine using virtualization and use the machine for all labs. At the end of the course, students will complete a capstone project to demonstrate mastery of course material....

The course relies heavily on text. There must be a way to use slides with drawings to convey key ideas. Even books on Linux have images. But the labs and the capstone project make up for it. The coverage is great for a single course. The instructor does a fantastic job, but I noticed that I enjoy specializations with a different instructor for each course. As always on Coursera, the forum is a ghost town. Well, there are the posts of persons begging for work review. The peer-grading system can be a curse.

Mandatory peer-graded assignments at the end each of the Akamai Professional Certificates completely ruin them. I award an extra star because the rest of the materials and exams are even better than Google's, but mandatory peer-graded assignments leave students waiting indefinitely for other students to review and grade them or open to unfair reviews and grades. This shouldn't be allowed here or anywhere else. What's the point of paying and studying for a certificate program you can't finish because your uploaded assignments are being ignored or trolled?

I would highly recommend this course as this is one of the best Linux courses I have taken so far on Coursera. Side note: although the title says Operating Systems Fundamentals, the OS covered is Linux and not Windows or Mac OS. It is true that one cannot become a true subject matter expert in 4 weeks. However, this module is comprehensive and packed with enough reading materials, videos, quizzes, and labs that by the end of this module you will be able to easily grasp all the fundamentals. The only requirement, in my view, is to spin up your virtual machine and follow along. The key is to practice, practice and practice some more. The best part is the labs are not time bound and the capstone project is the ice on the cake as you are forced to deeply understand the material in order to successfully complete it. By the way, for those who don't like CLI and prefer GUI fear not as you will appreciate the benefits and beauty of using the command line specially in the capstone. A big thank you to Shadow Farrell, the instructor, Akamai and Coursera.

The instructor’s expertise shines through in the clear explanations and relevant examples. The course materials, including lectures and assignments, are thoughtfully designed to enhance learning. This course has significantly improved my knowledge of operating systems. Highly recommended for anyone interested in computer science.
