Well everyone knows what it takes to be a fan.
So sport management field of study helps people understand what it takes to
actually manage the game or the event for the fans.
And so this is essentially what is building the platform for
where memories are made, connections are made.
If you think back to your experiences maybe as a young child, maybe even now.
It was probably ways you connected with a mother or a father, maybe an uncle,
maybe a grandfather.
You had connections with your coaches, with your teammates.
And so what the field does and what the study of sport management does,
is give the students the ability to truly understand the inner
workings of what it takes to run a successful sport organization.
>> So for the PAD certification in the athlete development specialization,
I teach three courses,
sport psychology, performance enhancement and athlete development.
And in addition the to courses that I'm teaching, I provide advising services for
students that are seeking to obtain the PAD certificate and/or
the athlete development specialization.
In my research I investigate how individuals' emotion regulation strategies
influenced their ability to perform movement tasks
in highly emotional environments.
So, if you think about a high-level athlete, or even a youth athlete,
they're going to experience quite a bit of emotion
in the high-level competitions that they're involved in.
And so the idea being, can we identify
the best type of emotion regulation strategy for participants to use?
So that they can effectively regulate their emotion but also effectively perform
all the movement tasks that they need to be successful in their sport.
Sports psychology for me is a very exciting field to be involved in
because of the wide range of application that I see.
Has huge impacts on coaches, athletes, their ability to perform,
the basic principles that we investigate in our research, and
the skills what we call psychological skills that have developed out of this
research can be applied across myriad domains including sport management or
the management of sport activities from an organizational standpoint.
So with sports psychology, coaches can learn several things about
how athletes can effectively use goal setting, how the coaches can
utilize basic principles of motivation to get the most out of their athletes.
They can learn some of the principles about motor learning, the most effective
ways to structure practice, to develop skills in their athletes, and to
ultimately for their athletes to develop expertise within their sport domain.
