When I think about new leaders coming into the profession, probably the hardest thing today is that our field has expanded so greatly. We are now at a crossroads to some really exciting work, but it requires us all to be bold and fearless. We really approach this as a technical thing to solve, but I really see it as a people thing to solve. What we most need is to expand our horizon. We really have a huge opportunity to start using the data to generate knowledge. The leadership that we work with often fundamentally do not understand what Nursing Informatics can bring to the field. The biggest challenge is to stay contemporary. We really should be a helper to the helpers. One of the most important things, and where I learned the most, and where I grew the most was volunteering to help others. Being a person that can reach out to others, to work together, be a collaborator. Learn something new. Mentor and coach every single day, another Nursing Informatician. If we understand the data and we know what the problems are, the data will help us move forward to better understand now and moving it from data to information, but ultimate to knowledge that we can refer back to the bedside and into the boardrooms. Relationships are the key to success. Be a strong communicator. Make sure you have a great mentor. Have some situational awareness. Be aware of where your work fits in the bigger scheme of things. Never forget the people, the families, and the communities, and frankly, the health of the planet that actually is the core driver of why we matter at all. We are the profession that knows how to do this and we need to step up to the table and lead.
