[MUSIC] So, what are the components that go into an artist's identity? Well, first, there's going to be your musical identity. And in this, we start out with say, the pallet of emotions being conveyed. The musical style that you're in or the genre. Also, influences go along with that and that can be good to compare yourself to some other artists, some artist comparisons. Also then, the vocal style or timbre and also the instrumental style or timbre. Is this virtuosic music or is this something that's a little more simple and song-oriented? So, we've got musical, next is your lyrical identity. And again, we start with the emotional content of the lyrics. The subject matter and the message in the lyrics. The level of intimacy in the lyrics and the type of language that's used. Is there colloquial language, is it regional, is it urban, is it country? Also then, the characters and the setting. How much do we know about who these people are? You look at bands like Steely Dan, who have these kind of fantastical characters in their songs and these interesting settings. Is it that or is it more personal, more normal, more relating to everyday life? Then we get into, number three, the personal identity. And this has to do with your attitude and your visual image, also the back story. It can be very helpful if an artist has a good back story, it gives people something to talk about when they're starting to talk about an artist. Also, if there's an particularly interesting artistic journey that you've been on. Maybe you started out one place and you've moved somewhere else. And also the willingness to tap your personal, emotional journey for your art. There are some artists like Tori Amos who really wear their heart on their sleeve and are really willing to go there, and talk about personal things in order to show us more about the human condition. So, what's your artist identity? Let's take a stab at actually writing this up. Your musical identity, what's your music like? Your lyrical identity, what do you care to write about? And your personal identity, how much do you care to share? Let's take a shot at writing up your own artist identity. So, here's what I would like for you to do. I want you to boil it down to a one to three sentence identity statement that describes you as an artist, that includes these three identity categories. Now, it's going to take a little while to get it down to one to three sentences and I've included in the course a couple of examples that you can use to make sure that you're on the right track. Mark Twain once said that if I'd had more time, I would of written a shorter letter. Just because this is one to three sentences, it doesn't mean that it's going to be easy. You may have to really work on this to get it down to being that tight, but it's really beneficial to be able to describe yourself in a very concise way as an artist.
