안녕하십니까? Hello, everyone. In our last module, you learned how to order food in a restaurant in Korean. In this module, you will learn how to introduce places to shop in Korean. Where is your favorite place to shop? Is there a famous shopping area in your hometown? How could you introduce that place in Korean? Let's get started with this topic. First, in this unit, you will learn how to talk about the place that you are going to to shop. Let's start by watching a video. Two people are talking about where they are going. Listen carefully. Shall we look at what they said in the video? The question was, 지금 어디에 가요? Where are you going? And the answer, 백화점에 가요. I'm going to the department store. Please listen again. 지금 어디에 가요? 백화점에 가요. In order to learn these expressions, we will first look at some vocabulary concerning stores. 시장. 시장 means market. 시장. 백화점. 백화점 means department store. 백화점. 슈퍼마켓. 슈퍼마켓 is a place where people shop for groceries and other household items. 슈퍼마켓. 편의점. 편의점 is a store open 24 hours or from early morning till late night. 편의점. 빵집. People buy bread and cakes in 빵집. 빵집. 문구점. 문구점 is a place where people buy stationery like pens and notebooks. 문구점. 서점. 서점 is a place where people buy books. 서점. Now listen and repeat after me. Let's check your vocabulary. Please look at the picture and tell me what kind of place it is in Korean. Well done. Now, let's study how to say where a person is going using the vocabulary we practiced before. In Korean, we use 에 가요/와요 to show that someone is going, or coming to their destination. 에 is a particle used after place nouns. When it is used with the verbs 가다 or 오다, it shows that the place noun is the destination. So, this expression means that one is going or coming to some place. Let's look at some examples. Where do students go every day? Yes, school. Let's put the place particle 에 after the destination 학교 and then use the verb 가요. 학교에 가요. I'm going to school. Let's continue and look at more examples. Where do you go to buy things? Yes, places like a department store or a market. Then, how would you make a sentence? Say your destination 백화점 or 시장 first, and then put 에 가요 after that noun. 백화점에 가요. or 시장에 가요. When the subject of the sentence is moving away from the speaker, we use 가요. When the subject is moving towards the speaker, we use 와요. Let's say you are in your house and your friend is coming over. How could you say that in Korean? Here, the subject is moving towards you, the speaker, so use 에 와요. Put 에 와요 after the destination 집. 친구가 집에 와요. My friend is coming to my house. Then, how do you ask others where they are going? Yes, we can use the question word 어디 and say 어디에 가요?. Since there is a question word 어디, the sentence ends with a falling intonation like 어디에 가요?, How was it?. I'm sure it wasn't too difficult. Let's practice now. Please make a sentence with the given words. Now, listen to the questions and answer. Let's do some speaking practice using the expressions you have learned so far. First, take a look at the dialogue. The first person asked, 지금 어디에 가요? Where are you going? And the other person answered, 백화점에 가요. I'm going to the department store. Be careful when you pronounce the word 백화점. When you pronounce 백화점, the final consonant ㄱ(기역) in the first syllable 백, is followed by ㅎ(히읗) in the second syllable 화. So, it is pronounced as an aspirate sound, /ㅋ/ of ㅋ(키읔). So the word meaning department store is pronounced [배콰점]. [배콰점]. Other examples are [추카], [여칼] and [도차카다]. Now listen and repeat after me. This time, please answer my questions. Very good. Now ask your friend a question and let them answer. Well done. Now can you answer my question? 지금 어디에 가요? Very good. You can answer with 백화점에 가요. or with 시장에 가요. Now, do you think you can tell others where you are going? Next, let's watch some video clips. Listen carefully. How did you do today? Did you understand what they said in the video? In this unit, you learned how to talk about the place that you are going to to shop in Korean. In our next unit, let's study how to list various stores. See you next time. 안녕히 계십시오.
