IELTS reading module, Part 2. In the IELTS exam, you will be asked to choose the correct heading for each section from the list of headings. There are more headings and sections, so you will not use them all. The main strategy here to remember is that the heading is a paraphrase of the topic sentence of the paragraph. You need to scheme to find the topic sentence the one that gives the idea of the paragraph. Then you have to go back to your list of headings and choose one that is similar in meaning. Remember, the correct heading will probably be a paraphrase of the first or second sentence of the paragraph. So you need to cross out the headings as you use them. And now let's take a look at our list of headings, type of task. When you're completing this type of task, you have to choose the correct heading for sections A through F from the list of headings below. So, for example, as you see, we have list of headings and we have sections A through F or 1 through 5. In this case, sections represent different paragraphs you have in the passage for example, section A paragraph one, section B, it's a paragraph two etc. What you need to do while you're completing this type of task, you have to go back to Section A, which is your paragraph one. Read the first and last sentences of the paragraph and then go back to list of headings and find the heading that matches the same idea. A lot of times your first and last sentences of the paragraph contained the main idea or topic sentence. But if you still do not understand the first and the last paragraph of the sentences of the paragraph, make sure you read a couple of more sentences. But that's how you're supposed to complete list of headings kind of task. And you do not need to read the entire passages or paragraphs all you have to do to make sure that your section A has the same idea. One of the ideas in the list of headings. And now I'm going to review our strategy. Our final strategy for today's lesson is going to be about choosing answer from a list. The main strategy here to remember is to read the instructions carefully and scan the passage, looking for the key words in the direction line. Read carefully around the words in the passage. Scans the answer choice quickly and look forward in each statement. You have to make sure you match the keywords in the passage with the keywords in the statement you have. We had very similar examples to this one as this one. And make sure you do not pay attention to pronouns. Look for nouns, verbs, and modifiers. The most important tip here to remember is that is important to read the instructions carefully and pay attention to the keywords in the direction line. After you scan, choose the answers that you remember, then go back and look for the other ones. All right, so here we have our example about choosing answer from a list. When you're completing this type of task, you need to fill out the gaps you have about the summary of the importance of language. So you have four gaps. You need to go back to your list and you have a list of seven words. So you have to pick the words that match in the context. Of course, it's going to be about the passage and if you have a common understanding about the passage, so that will be easier for you to complete. However, also, if you have very good knowledge of grammar, so you can easily guess what kind of word will be fitting in that context. But again, you have to make sure you have a common knowledge of your reading in order to complete this summary. The importance of language. And that's what you have to do while completing your choosing answers from a list type of task. And now we're going to review the most important strategies and tips that can help you to attain a high score. First of all, remember to examine all the words and phrases contained in the diagram or chart. Remember, by reading these words, you're helping yourself to understand the task better and find correct answers. Also, never read any text before looking at the related questions. Always use your titles, headings, underlined or highlighted words and diagrams as part of your scanning process. Read first and last sentences in each paragraph to locate topic sentences, especially when you're completing your headings list of heading step of task. And remember, learn to identify question types. Also remember that thinking about synonyms, paraphrases and modal verbs can help you to locate correct information, especially when it comes to true, false, not given or yes, no and not given questions. Remember the time limit 15 minutes per text should be your goal. Of course, your last text is going to be the most challenging, and you might want to save some time for your last passage, especially. Do not spend too much time on your first passages and do what's easier first. And the last one, practice with a highlighter and pen before taking your test circling keywords highlighting important words. It's a very important process in order to succeed during your reading part of the IELTS test. And now we're going to review our final slide of today's PowerPoint and the most important point we studied in our today's lesson. First of all, remember to read carefully how many words you are required to write. Secondly, you have to make sure to check the question to see if it asks for your own words or words from the text. And for summaries, you have to make sure you have a common understanding of the passage. Make sure you always read headings first, and then the topic sentences. And it is very important to remember that you do not need to read the entire passage. Always make sure you understand what kind of task you have and then go back and complete your task. You don't have to come completely read the entire passage. Sometimes all you have to do to read first and last sentences of the paragraph or of the passage. Or sometimes it can be scanning for the specific words, keywords in the passage. So make sure you do not read the entire passage, but you understand what kind of task you have first. And again, in order to complete reading task successfully, you need to make sure you practice skills such as scanning, summarizing, paraphrasing, sequencing and identifying parts of speech. And you have to make sure you practice a lot before you take your exam in order to feel confident and less nervous during the test.
