[MUSIC] If you're a teacher of English as a foreign language or if you teach other languages, you will be working with your learners on developing their reading skills. We've designed this course to explore ways in which you can combine teaching reading with an important approach to language teaching, using tasks. >> Tasks have become increasingly important in language classrooms over the last three decades. You probably already use tasks in your classroom, but on this course we hope to explore new ways of integrating tasks to develop reading skills. >> I'm Amos Paran, and I'm a Reader in Second Language Education at the UCL Institute of Education. I started my career teaching English as a foreign language in secondary schools in Israel. And I've also worked a lot with teachers in secondary school contexts around the world. I've also written course books and materials for teaching reading. My main areas of research are, unsurprisingly, reading in a foreign language, and the use of literature in language classrooms. >> I'm Andrea and I'm the director of the program at the UCL Institute of Education. Like Amos, I used to be a secondary school teacher of English as a foreign language in Hungary. Later I also taught English as a second language in the US, and got involved in teacher education. My main research interests are second language acquisition and second language instruction. One of my primary focus areas is task-based language teaching and learning. >> And I'm Mir Domingo and I work with Amos and Andrea in the TESOL and applied linguistics programs at the UCL Institute of Education. I started teaching English in secondary schools in the US and continued to work in teacher education both in the US and the UK. Among my main areas of research is design and development of online learning environments. >> The starter course will introduce the concept of task and the key principles of task-based language teaching and learning. >> We then examine the role of reading in real life, and in second and foreign language teaching and learning. >> We move on to discussing our thinking about the interface between task-based language teaching and second language reading. We will explore how TBIT and teaching second language reading can be successfully integrated in practice. >> The course culminates in creating task-based materials for teaching reading in your own language teaching contexts. >> Much of what we will ask you to do will be to read and to exchange ideas and thoughts online. At times, we will also ask you to complete various activities, including posting pictures online and designing tasks. It is our hope that you will not only learn about the concepts but also get to experience them yourself. >> The course is open to everyone, and we do hope you will join us. For those of you who would like recognition for your work on this course, there are assessments embedded for you to complete. >> We really forward to working with you. [MUSIC]
