Welcome back. In this penultimate lesson, I'll give one last plug about why it's so great to get involved in a data viz community project such as Makeover Monday, and then I'll go over how to get started. This will set you up to get going on the final peer review assignment for this course. The Makeover Monday community project is one of my personal favorites for several reasons. One, it's a fantastic way to get experience with a wide variety of datasets. You'll see everything from big data to small data, clean data to how did anyone think this was clean enough data, and funny data to serious data. Two, it's not a huge time commitment. The hosts encourage people to try to timebox to an hour or so. This is to keep people from feeling like they need to spend days and days on every single one. There are definitely times, though, when you can just be so inspired that you're compelled to spend extra time, and that's okay. Three, because of that timeboxing, and if you discipline yourself to stick to it, it's a great way to get faster at making good viz's. Again though, you can still spend as much or as little time as you want. Four, with the weekly cadence, you can quickly build up a robust portfolio of work that you can actually share with the public, unlike most of the stuff you'll make in the course of your day job. Five, finally, it's a fabulous way to exercise your creativity and try new things that maybe you can't do at work for whatever reason. For example, maybe your admin hasn't upgraded the Tableau server yet, meaning you can't try that cool new feature in your latest dashboard, but you can try it out and learn how to use it in Tableau Public because it's always up to date on the latest release, or maybe it's as simple as trying out a new color palette. Those dark backgrounds are awfully sleek and tempting after all. So first, to get all set up to do our Makeover Monday activity, I recommend that you make a Twitter account if you don't already have one, or if you prefer to keep your professional and personal lives separate, then maybe make one just for tweeting about data viz stuff. Some communities are very active on other social networks, but the data viz community as a whole, not just Tableau, is very active on Twitter. Once you've picked a catchy screen name and your Twitter is set up, head on over to data.world and register for a free account there. This is the site where all of the Makeover Monday datasets are hosted, and you need to be registered to download the data.
