[MUSIC] Welcome back, learners. We're now at a super exciting stage, and frankly one of my favorite stages in the news gathering process. And that's interviewing. You have chosen your topic for your final news report. You've chosen the form that you're going to execute, either hard news or feature. You have started the news gathering process and thinking about what sources you need, how you're going to approach them. Now you're getting to a critical part of the process, the stage that we're at right now, which is interviewing. You need to understand than an interview is at best a conversation, at worst an interrogation, but somewhere in the middle sometimes. You need to know what you need to get. So preparing questions, thinking about what this interview can offer you, what you need to understand, what you need to learn, are all very careful and thoughtful choices. However, you don't want to make yourself so stiff and so staged that when you talk to somebody you're like a robot. You want to make it natural. You want to make it a conversation. You want to enable the person you're talking to who may not have ever met you before, who might be a little bit nervous about talking to a journalist. You want to make them feel at ease. And that's on you. So be personable, be conversational, be human, be real, be present. And that takes practice. So that's why this stage of this capstone is so important. These are real skills that you need to have to be a successful journalist. Now remember, you're hopefully going to be talking to at least two people, if not three, for your final news report. So, you're going to be doing this process a few times. Please don't be too hard on yourself. It's okay to be nervous. It's okay not to feel like things went perfectly. The bottom line though is, if you do things with an ethical standpoint of I want to do my best to represent what this person said accurately, and quote them properly, that's a huge step. So please acknowledge that, and I know you will. And just remember, you're style of interviewing is going to be unique to you. So we're going to supply a few examples of how people interview around the world, but you don't have to be the next Oprah Winfrey or somebody else who's a favorite interviewer. Be yourself, and that will win the battle in the end. [MUSIC]
