Professor Alan K. L. Chan received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, Canada, in Chinese and comparative philosophy and religion. He taught at the University of Manitoba, Canada, before he married a Singaporean and happily moved to Singapore. He is currently Toh Puan Mahani Idris Daim Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences and Vice President (Alumni and Advancement) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Previously, he was Professor of Philosophy and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at National University of Singapore (NUS). He was at various times a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, University of Washington, Kyoto University, and Chinese University of Hong Kong.Chan’s research focuses on Chinese philosophy and religion and he has published widely in such areas as Confucian ethics and Daoist philosophy. While at NUS, he was twice awarded the Teaching Excellence Award. He is a member of the Founding Editorial Board, Oxford Bibliographies of Chinese Studies; member of the International Advisory Board, Consortium of Humanities Centres and Institutes; Chairman of the Board of Directors, Confucius Institute, NTU; member of the International Advisory Panel, Asia Competiveness Institute, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS; member of the Editorial Board, Journal of Daoist Studies (USA); and member of several other Boards.
