Bio

Stefaan Van den Bogaert is Professor of European Law, Head of the Department of European law and Director of the Europa Institute at Leiden Law School. Van den Bogaert is also visiting Professor of European Sports Law at the University of Brussels (VUB) and is a member of the editorial committee of the Common Market Law Review. His main research interests are EU internal market law, EU competition law, EU institutional law, EMU, and sports law.

Before joining Leiden Law School, Van den Bogaert held academic positions at Maastricht University. He was also an intern at the European Commission. In Maastricht, he was nominated for the University teaching award and received the Hustinx Stipend for outstanding young scholarship. Van den Bogaert graduated from the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Leuven. He holds an LLM in European and Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge and obtained a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence with a thesis on the regulation of the mobility of sportsmen in the European Union in the post-Bosman era. The thesis was subsequently published in monograph form by Kluwer Law International in 2005. Van den Bogaert also wrote the supplement ‘The Netherlands and EU Law’ to P. Craig and G. de Burca’s EU Law: Text, Cases and Materials (2012, 5th ed., Oxford University Press).
